Biidaaban Grade 6-8 Science Fair

Biidaaban Kinoomaagegamik’s December Science Fair was a huge success. Grade 6, 7, and 8 students showcased their research, experiments, and findings in colourful displays throughout the school gymnasium. The Science Fair demonstrated students’ curiosity about the world around them, and their amazing work ethic, as they sought to answer scientific questions, big and small.

Some students explored questions with important real-world applications, like “How is plastic polluting our oceans?” while others stuck to queries with more entertainment value, like “Which brand of soda explodes the most when you drop a Mentos into its 2-litre bottle?”. Regardless of what type of project they pursued, students were enthusiastic to share their findings with teachers, parents, guests, and each other.

Several students chose topics that aligned closely with their interests. For example, one student looked at the impact of structures on fish behaviour, beginning with the hypothesis that “fish are drawn to structure for safety.” Another group investigated the effect of low temperatures on insect metabolism, drawing on their previous knowledge from caring for crickets. And a pair of aspiring horticulturalists studied how different types of light (LED vs. sunlight) impact plant growth.

The fair wasn’t just about science – it celebrated teamwork, learning, and creativity. The event was a great opportunity for students to show off what they had learned and sparked excitement for future scientific discoveries.
