From November 4-6, several staff members of the Life-Long Learning Centre, those involved directly with employment and career coaching, as well as Post Secondary education supports, ventured to Sault Ste. Marie for the 39th Annual ONECA Conference called “Weaving Friendships, Creating Balance”.
The conference was sponsored by: Za-geh-do-win (Information Clearinghouse), Fanshawe Institute of Indigenous Learning, Algoma University ,Indigenous Programs, Laurentian University and Northern College.
Attendees received information on:
· OSAP and Post Secondary Updates;
· Gizhewaadiziwin (The Ways of the Creator);
· Strengths of our Ancestors;
· Financial Literacy;
· Evaluating Indigenous Needs on Ontario Post-Secondary Campuses; and
· Exploring Student Identities through an Indigenous Lens
Presentations on ribbon skit making, smudging, and medicine wheel knowledge sharing were also available to take part in.
All who attended expressed favourable comments on what they learned and experienced over the three-day conference. Sagamok Education is committed to providing clear and adaptive processes. Life-Long Learning Staff’s attendance at the ONECA conference supports this goal as the team has come back with new understanding and best practices that will improve their ability to coach citizens of Sagamok to reach their full potential.
